Okay, so.... Candy is finally out! Well its been out for several weeks but I've been so bad with my blog recently I keep neglecting to update you all. anyway, here it finally is. This was a particularly fun job for me as I got to play 'creative director' for the first time. I've been a fan of Candy since it came out a couple of years ago so I was hugely honoured when Luis Venegas asked me to be involved.

The Playmate bunny girls and the Playboy brand is such an icon but we'd never seen anyone subvert or challenged it before so it seemed like the perfect subject to play with for a Transgender Magazine. I really wanted to have fun with the ideals of the brands identity with this project and play with crass gender clichés, pairing cigars and boxing gloves with high heels and corsets, inventing characters that were both alpha male and extremely feminine, Playmate and Hugh Hefner.

Here are some pictures of the coat I designed for Wooyoungmi in conjunction with charity 'Art Against Knives', the jacket was exibited at Selfridges and then auctioned off on Twitter, all the proceeds went to Art Against Knives. The second photo is of me and my 4 eyed brothers who also designed jackets for the project, they include Jewellery designer Jordan Askill, Editor of Dazed Digital David Hellqvist, Blogger Steve Salter and Mr Porter menswear buyer Reece Crisp, Photos by Rokas Darulis.

“I got a call from Ronnie Cooke-Newhouse telling me to ‘cancel everything!’ as Comme was about to get in contact about an exciting project that would be too amazing to refuse and that I should wait by the phone,” explains set design extraordinaire Gary Card on his latest collaboration for Comme des Garçons’ S/S12 collection. “I was really excited but also a little terrified as I had no idea what they were going to ask me to do. Adrian Joffe called the next morning to tell me that I'd been selected to make headpieces for the show…”

For designer Rei Kawakubo’s latest collection she commissioned three artists to create headpieces to accompany her “White Drama” themed collection. Giving Card only three words: “white, rubber and object” he was left with a vast creative freedom to make whatever he wanted with the only restraints of practicality, “Rei works in complete secret, never letting anybody see the collection in progress or explaining the direction. Adrian informed me that it was the accident of it all coming together that Rei always looked for.”

Often using playful objects in his work Card was immediately drawn to “bundling” together dog chew toys, rubber animals and clown dolls which later led to the idea of contortion and inflated amorphic shapes tied together with elastic bands, “Latex was an obvious choice – it allowed me to play with the different qualities of latex objects, like deflating or even dangerously over-pumping them,” explains Card on his material and process. “I liked the connotations of rubber as well, but playing with that as well was fun: making this 'sexy', 'sleazy' material cuddly and approachable, almost innocent. Subverting the subversive I guess.”

Working closely with House of Harlot, who specialise in rubber clothing and accessories, Card experimented with shapes, sizes and the attributes and constraints of the unique material. With no idea of what the collection was going to look like Card’s overall aim was to make something close to the brand’s heritage, “I knew they had to be dramatic, progressive and yet slightly playful.”

The result? Unique, inflated amorphous forms that perfectly complimented and added a sense of fun to Kawakubo’s grand, almost couture-like collection that appeared to track the progression through birth, marriage and death with its ceremonial robes, bridal gowns and floral burial dress. “I guess I wanted people to be delighted and maybe challenged by them,” explains Card on the response he wanted his pieces to give.“But really all I wanted was for them to stay on the models’ heads. I had actual nightmares about the headpieces exploding down the catwalk.”

With an entirely white collection, it has led editors to suggest white is the new black. Card agrees with Kawakubo's strong colour decision for S/S12, "White is rarely completely white, the light and colours around a white object will change its tone completely, right now all the white things around me have a yellow tone to them because of the low lighting in my studio, I like how it mimics other colours, in this respect white can be anything and everything."

Wow! its been ages hasn't it. I'm so sorry for neglecting you, I have been busy I swear, so many exciting things have been going on, Garage magazine with Nick Knight and Dinos Chapman, (both of which are childhood hero's of mine), as well as year 2 of my onging collaboration with Loewe. My first range of toys for Nicola Formachetti's pop up store in New York (of which I can't wait to show you!) As well as some top secret stuff that I'll be unveilling next week.

Here are a few bits from the Garage 'Agarthe's House' project, the first being the shoot for the magazine and the second, the installation at the Gagosian Gallery. For this I remade the shoot's dolls house set for the Garage Magazine Launch.

Ahead of their Kacper Kasprzyk-shot winter campaign, the Korean sister duo worked with set designer Gary Card and filmmakers Videopolis on this conceptual video,

The South Korean duo behind Wooyoungmi base the label on their sharp eye for advanced sartorial details and conceptual plays on traditional shirts, jackets and coats. For this new season, focus was moved to the practicality and function of the clothes with technical fabrics paired against standard luxury materials to fit a 21st century urban lifestyle. Styled by Dazed & Confused's Robbie Spencer, the new collection was also shot for a new film for Wooyoungmi's Autumn/Winter 2011 collection.

Art Director Katie Chung worked with set designer Gary Card to create the video with Videopolis, featuring model Alexander Beck in disconcerting blurring shots and shifting shapes between looks. The result is a perfect mix of the modern aesthetics seen within the pieces alongside the conceptual film.

'LA-based folk-rock outfit Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros form a tribal dance circle around a 15-foot-tall illuminated wicker man in today’s film. Director Jacob Sutton and set designer Gary Card staged the mesmerizing scene (soundtracked by the band’s spirited anthem “Kisses Over Babylon”) in the Old Vic tunnels underneath Waterloo station, where the group performed a five-night sold-out run of shows last month, complete with puppeteers, fire-eaters and acrobats. The 19th-century subway labyrinth was launched as a venue in 2009 by Kevin Spacey (creative director of the Old Vic Theatre) and his business partner Hamish Jenkinson. Led by enigmatic singer-songwriter Alexander Ebert, the ten-strong troupe have amassed a fiercely loyal fan base following the release of their 2009 debut Up From Below, thanks to their blend of hand-clapping country-tinged tunes with southern gothic melodies and shambolic live performances—known to devolve into sing-a-longs that spill out to the street. NOWNESS spoke to the band's bohemian frontman.'

After the tremendous fun we had on the 'INFLATE' story last year I teamed up again with Robbie Spencer and Anthony Mule to do another 'letsseehowmuchstuffwecanattachtothispoormodel' project for Dazed, this time with a metallic theme. My team and I spent 4 days producing these insane costume pieces and about 6 hours frantically sticking it all on the wonderfully patient Andrej Pejic. I'll post the 'Making of' pics soon.

Dazed TV Party, a new and exciting online music and pop culture show that brings to life the innovative and anarchic editorial spirit that has made Dazed & Confused one of the trendsetting magazine brands of the last 20 years. Hosted by Dazed's literary editor Stuart Hammond, and created by Dazed co-founder Jefferson Hack and deputy editor Tim Noakes, the Dazed TV Party will be an ongoing audiovisual experiment produced by Juliette Larthe at Warp Films. GARY CARD AT LEVI'S REGENT STREET STORE

Denim elves and polka dots dominate the jean giant's central London shop window, as crafted by interior design maverick Gary Card.

“I wanted the place to evoke the feeling of childhood”, says set designer Gary Card of the giant denim polka dot maze that he has just installed in Levi’s Regent Street store’s window. The Christmas labyrinth that’s complete with intricate shelves, a small house and a set of denim elves is Card’s yet another venture into large-scale design, following a successful collaboration with London’s new retail concept LN-CC, and a series of installations in Loewe’s windows. Dazed sat him down for a little chat.

Dazed Digital: What was the concept behind the installation?
Gary Card: When we first discussed the collaboration, Levi’s said they wanted to create a Christmas display, but one that wouldn’t necessarily be shouting Christmas. That’s when the polka dot fabric first came into picture. It’s one of Levi’s signature prints this year and I love that it’s so reminiscent of snow! So we wanted to create something that would evoke childhood memories of searching and discovering, without having obvious symbols such as Santa or the Christmas tree. At the same time, we introduced elements such as the polka dots and denim elves, which are very reminiscent of Christmas.

DD: What kind of feelings were you hoping to provoke with the maze?
Gary Card: The idea of curiosity. A little bit of discovery. It should be charming, because charm is the main thing about Christmas, really. It also had to be cool. I love the idea of having a playground, because, again, it brings back those childhood memories. The treatment of colours was very important too. It would have been really easy to bring in colours such as the signature Levi’s red, but I wanted to keep it cold inside.

DD: Can you tell us a bit about the craftsmanship behind the installation?
Gary Card: I was very excited about working with the Levi's denim, I wanted to make a denim environment, I love material-led projects, ideas that are dictated and driven by one defining factor, I really like restriction in a brief, in a way it's easier to work with, worst thing in for me is a client saying, 'do whatever you like'. Denim is very hands-on and tactile, but also tough and resilient, perfect for stretching over the shapes, very much like making a canvas. I loved the colour too, it feels cold, totally fits the festive vibe.

DD: What was the most difficult aspect of planning and carrying out?
Gary Card: The most difficult part was managing the gallery space, how do make a set piece that the viewer can explore and hang out in without blocking the main walk ways into the store, that was very tricky. it's great for me if you get lost in my 'denim fun house' but not so great for Levi's if you get so lost you can't find the actual shop, so that was a very big consideration.

DD: Tell us something funny about the Christmas denim elves....
Gary Card: The funniest thing is coming up, we are going to be in the space making them during next week, doing a kind of denim elf making master class! 'elves making elves' I'm calling it - it's going to be hilarious...

DD: How would you describe the Levi's Christmas window?
Gary Card: It started life as a kind of 'bauhaus' concept, I was interested the relationship between very simple shapes and negative space, however it very quickly turned into a set for a mental kids TV show! But that was cool, I totally embraced that, it's supposed to be fun, at one point I really wanted to call it Polka Dot Playground, I think that's the essence of the project!

LN-CC Store finally open!!!!

Wow! it's finally here, the LN-CC London Store is now open for business! i've been working on this project now for about 3 months with my magnificent father, the work horse, Christopher Card. Together we made 3 showrooms, A library, and 2 conjoining corridors that link the space. There is so much I want to say about this project I don't know where to begin. So here are a couple of links, interviews and the first batch of pictures. (expect to see a lot more from this in the next couple of months.)

So..... to begin, some PR blurb!

A new London based retail concept, LN-CC is a project initiated by John Skelton (ex oki-ni and Harrods) and Daniel Mitchell with store design by celebrated set designer Gary Card.

Product includes menswear, womenswear- both new and archive collections based around a concept of unisex styling, books curated by collector Conor Donlon and a specially selected music offer.

The store consists of three concept rooms, a book and record store, a music room for private events, a working studio and is linked together by an indoor forest and futuristic skeletal tunnel constructed from raw wood and orange Perspex. Each room has it's own theme that as a whole embodies the LN-CC vision. For phase 2 in 2011 we will open a new, larger room to be used as a gallery space for exhibitions and screenings (details tbc).

This project is more than a store, it's an evolving platform of curated ideas encompassing clothing, music and art in both a physical and digital environment.

Hello again. I've looked forward to showing these guys off for ages, I painted them a few months ago for a fab new mag called 'Re-bel'. It's produced by the wonderful leather wear design team 'Jaiden rVa James'. The whole issue is fantastic, with contributions from Robbie Spencer, Ben Weller and Simon Foxton, as well as interviews with JW Anderson and Juegen Teller! (and me!!!). Try and grab a copy.

It took the boys literally months to squeeze these out of me and I really pissed them off in the process (naughty Gary), finally I delivered these sometime in May. They are loosely based on Jaiden rVa James work. I could go on but I'll wait and post the mags interview soon. Hope you like em. x

This is one the strangest fashion shoots I've ever made stuff for. Robbie Spencer asked me to design some bizarre padded pieces/head gear and plaster accessories. I've wanted to make Cronenberg/Naked Lunch inspired outfits for ages so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Robbie and I played a kind of 'human buckaroo' with the poor models while they baked under about ten layers of of Lycra, latex and fashion finery. I felt dreadful for them. Who says modeling is easy?

For me most shoots are a frantic race against time to get everything ready, this however was one of those rare occasions where we were waiting for make up to be redone, so me and Daniel Sannwald decided to play around with a little puppet I made for the shoot. I made him dance while Daniel filmed him. He made made some wonderful shapes and one day we'll put the video out, in the mean time here are a few screen grabs.

For some reason I've never blogged these. They were made for this years American Music Awards and later toured the world as part her show. They originally appeared in a shoot for Vogue Homme Japan, Gaga liked them and wanted them for her and all 10 of her dancers. Anyway, it's about 6 months late but I thought these pics were worth a post.

The wonderful Bistrotheque boys once again commissioned me to design the interior for their HQ pop up restaurant for Brighton Festival.

Here are a few shots and the accompanying blurb from Dazed Digital.

"Brighton also have the privilege of hosting HQ at Brighton Dome, a pop up social club with a menu designed by London restaurant Bistrotheque's. The HQ resides in the beautiful Dome as a lunchtime canteen, serving up delicious yet simple food. With over 240 performances planned, Brighton Festival have as such not only brought art and music to town, but also great food. And lastly, while there, don't forget to look up towards the skies: set designer Gary Card have crowned the HQ with a glass installation in the ceiling and another one in the bar, through his specially designed limited edition Dark Star beer bottles, ensuring you'll leave happy in every way possible. The glass installation is a "reflection on biology, travel, sexuality, geography, and nature. Each viewer who ponders the piece will have his or her own response". I don't think I've ever posted the jumper parrot before. This was so much fun to make, it took about 5 hours to put together and made up of about 100 Uniqlo cashmere jumpers, there were no sketches or any grand plan of how to put it together, we just winged it (no pun intended.)

This is a bit silly because it's so little but it's so sweet I thought it deserved a post, I recently saw Gaga at the O2 and said hello after the show, I gave her this tiny yellow hand sculpture as a little present to say thanks for her support last year. I was surprised to see she wore it out as a bracelet! Go's well with her hair don't you think?

Liberty Window for the Oh You Pretty Things' exhibition

Hello! I've just made a window for my favorite shop, Liberty, it was made to promote the 'Oh you pretty things' exhibition curated by the Spring Projects team. I was asked to interpret each photographer's work as I saw fit, here's the result. They are all painted in ink on water-colour paper and mounted onto wooden boxed.

Here's the blurb -

'Known predominately as a set designer and illustrator Gary Card is one of London’s’ most talked about up and coming
talents. Commercially his clients have included: Comme de Garcons, Uniqlo, Topshop, House of Holland, Dover Street
market, Nike, Adidas, Stella McCartney, Penguin and LG. His work has featured in: The New York Times, Another Man,
Another Magazine, Dazed & Confused, ID, British Vogue, Vogue Homme Japan, V Man, Pop and Paradis.

For Liberty’s window, Gary has produced a new series of work: drawn images on box structures which take inspiration from, and refer to the 5 photographers images in the Oh! You Pretty Things exhibition (see seperate press release). Cards’ trademarks; his use of colour and texture, which employ an unbridled aesthetic that utilizes a combination of visual mediums and aesthetics, are some of the elements evident in this piece, the second of his Special Projects series, which comprises unique custom made pieces for interior spaces. All pieces in the window are for sale.'
